Emissions compliant engines
Stage V engines, ready to fit.
EU Stage V is the toughest emissions standard yet for off-road engines, and it’s what new machines in the UK and EU need today. We have 41 Stage V engines from Hatz, Lister Petter, Rehlko and Yanmar, from 3.4 kW to 105 kW, configured for your machine and backed by parts and people who know them.
Why Stage V
Compliant now, and ready for what’s next.
Choosing a Stage V engine today saves a re-power, a rental swap or a lost contract later.
Ready for new machines
Engines placed on the market for new non-road machinery in the UK and EU must meet Stage V, so a Stage V engine keeps your machine sellable and compliant.
Welcome on more sites
Since January 2025, generators from 37 to 560 kW must meet Stage V anywhere in London. From 2030, all non-road machinery in that range will. Other cities and big contractors are heading the same way.
Cleaner, with proof
Stage V cuts soot to a fraction of older engines, and every engine carries type approval, so you have the paperwork when a client, a site manager or a tender asks for it.
Sold around the world
17 of our Stage V engines also meet US EPA Tier 4 Final, and some carry China IV and Bharat Stage V too, which helps if your machines are built for export.

Aftertreatment is what each engine needs to meet Stage V: DOC is a diesel oxidation catalyst, DPF a diesel particulate filter and EGR exhaust gas recirculation. Most engines under 19 kW meet Stage V with no filter at all, which keeps them simple to service. Power figures are the manufacturer’s maximum ratings.
The rules
Stage V in plain English.
What the standard is, when it applies and what it means for the engine you choose.
What is Stage V?
Stage V is the European emissions standard for engines in non-road mobile machinery: diggers, dumpers, compressors, pumps, generators, mowers and the rest. It’s set by Regulation (EU) 2016/1628 and limits the carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides and particulates an engine can put out for each kWh of work.
It’s the biggest step yet. For the first time it covers every power band, from the smallest single-cylinder engine up to big generator engines over 560 kW, and for engines between 19 and 560 kW it limits the number of soot particles as well as their weight. In practice, that means a particulate filter on those engines.
When did it start, and does it apply in the UK?
Stage V applied to engines placed on the market from 2019, and from 2020 for engines between 56 and 130 kW. In Great Britain the same Stage V limits apply, and engines need GB type approval, based on their EU approval, before they can be placed on the market. In Northern Ireland, EU or UK(NI) type approval applies.
The limits, by power band
Figures are grams per kWh of work, with particle number (PN) in particles per kWh.
| Engine power | CO | HC + NOx | PM | Particle number |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Below 8 kW | 8.00 | 7.50 | 0.40 | – |
| 8 to 19 kW | 6.60 | 7.50 | 0.40 | – |
| 19 to 37 kW | 5.00 | 4.70 | 0.015 | 1×10¹² |
| 37 to 56 kW | 5.00 | 4.70 | 0.015 | 1×10¹² |
| 56 to 130 kW | 5.00 | HC 0.19, NOx 0.40 | 0.015 | 1×10¹² |
| 130 to 560 kW | 3.50 | HC 0.19, NOx 0.40 | 0.015 | 1×10¹² |
The jump at 19 kW is the one that matters most when you’re choosing. Below it, an engine can meet Stage V with good combustion and, on some, EGR. Above it, the particulate limit falls by more than 25 times and a particle-number limit arrives, so a DPF becomes the norm. If your machine sits close to 19 kW, it’s worth talking to us about which side of the line to choose.
What about generators?
Generator engines are covered too. In London, generators from 37 to 560 kW have had to meet Stage V anywhere in Greater London since 1 January 2025, and from 2030 all non-road machinery in that power range will need Stage V across the capital. More clients and main contractors now ask for Stage V on their sites wherever they are.
Our Fusion Series includes a Stage V range, from about 6 kVA to over 600 kVA. Tell us the load and the site, and we’ll match the set to the rules.
Replacing an engine in an older machine
The rules are different when you’re replacing an engine in a machine that’s already in service. In some cases a replacement engine doesn’t have to meet the latest stage, but that depends on the machine, its age and where it works. Send us the details of the machine and the engine that’s fitted now, and we’ll tell you your options, including a Stage V upgrade if it fits.
Questions
Good to know.
Anything else, call us on +44 (0) 1626 778 266.
Do I need a Stage V engine?
If you’re building new machinery to sell in the UK or EU, almost certainly. If you’re replacing an engine in a machine that’s already working, it depends on the machine and where it’s used. Tell us about it and we’ll check.
Do all Stage V engines have a DPF?
No. Most engines under 19 kW meet Stage V without a particulate filter, including every Hatz engine we list under 19 kW. Above 19 kW, the particle number limit means a DPF is usual. The table above shows what each of our engines uses.
Is a Stage V engine harder to maintain?
Not much. Engines with a DPF need the right low-ash oil and the occasional regeneration, which most do automatically while working. We stock the filters and service parts and can talk you through it.
Does Stage V apply to generators?
Yes. Generator engines have their own Stage V limits, and London requires Stage V for generators from 37 to 560 kW. Our Fusion Series includes Stage V sets.
Can I use a Stage V engine abroad?
Yes. 17 of our Stage V engines also meet US EPA Tier 4 Final, and some carry China IV and Bharat Stage V. Tell us the destination and we’ll confirm the paperwork.
Is Stage V the same as Tier 4 Final?
They’re close but not the same. Tier 4 Final is the US EPA standard. Many engines are certified to both, but you need the right approval for where the machine will be sold or used.
