Marine Engines and Generators

Keeping boats working.

Whether it’s a workboat, a fishing boat or a cruiser on its mooring, the engine has to start every time and keep going when you’re miles from help. Sleemans supplies marine diesel engines, generators and the parts to keep them running, and we’ve been doing it from Teignmouth, on the Devon coast, for nearly 70 years.

Most boats are a long way from a workshop when something goes wrong, so the engine has to be right first time, and so do the parts. Whether you need a new engine, a generator for onboard power or a filter for an old favourite, we’ll check the details before anything ships.

What a marine engine has to cope with

Salt air, damp, tight engine bays and long hours at steady load are hard on any engine. Marine engines are built for it, with cooling systems, exhausts and materials designed for life afloat. That’s why it pays to match the engine to the job, not just the horsepower.

Propulsion engines

The engine that drives the boat, through a gearbox and shaft to the propeller. Workboats, fishing boats and cruisers each need different power, weight and duty, so we’ll ask how the boat is used before we suggest anything.

Auxiliary engines and generators

Engines that power a generator, hydraulics or a pump rather than the boat itself. They often run for hours at a fixed speed, so steady running and fuel economy matter more than outright power.

Pumps and standby power

Bilge, fire and emergency pumps need to start every time they’re called on. Regular servicing and the right spares on board make all the difference.

Marine engines we supply and support

Perkins marine engines

Current Perkins marine engines include the M92B for propulsion and the 4.4GM series for auxiliary power, and plenty of boats still run on classic Perkins engines like the 4.108, 4.236 and 6.354. Read our Perkins marine engines guide for the full range, what the old model numbers mean, and when to rebuild or repower.

Yanmar

Compact, smooth-running Yanmar diesels are a popular choice for smaller boats. We supply Yanmar engines and parts, including complete packages like a Yanmar 1GM10 to replace an old Farymann.

Sabb

The Norwegian Sabb engine has a loyal following in fishing boats and classic craft. We keep parts for Sabb engines and can help you track down the harder-to-find ones.

Lister Petter and other brands

Marine use is part of Lister Petter’s long history, and we’re a Lister Petter specialist for engines and parts. We also supply parts for Volvo, Lombardini and other brands. If you can’t see yours, ask us.

Repowering a boat

When an old engine is worn out, or parts are getting hard to find, a new engine can make the boat more reliable, quieter and cheaper to run. A repower is rarely a straight swap, though. Before you order, check:

  • the engine bed and mounts
  • the gearbox and shaft
  • cooling, exhaust and fuel connections
  • controls, instruments and wiring
  • the emissions rules where the boat is used

Send us the details of what’s fitted now, ideally with photos of the serial plate, and we’ll suggest an engine that fits, and tell you what will need to change. You can also use our engine replacement form.

Onboard power

Marine generator sets keep the lights, fridge and electronics running when you’re away from shore power. For quieter power on the mooring, our battery packs run lights, laptops and small appliances with no noise or fumes, and recharge from the mains, solar or the engine.

Parts for marine engines, old and new

We carry parts for current and classic marine engines, including:

  • fuel, oil and air filters
  • raw water pump impellers
  • gaskets and overhaul kits
  • injectors and fuel system parts
  • starters and alternators

The quickest way to get the right part is to send us the engine model and full serial number from the plate, with a photo if you can. Or search our spare parts by part number or engine.

Shipped to the boat, wherever it is

We’re on the Devon coast in Teignmouth and ship marine engines and parts all over the world, from a single impeller by courier to a full repower on a pallet. Need parts from several brands? Our consolidated shipping puts everything into one delivery to your boatyard, marina or port.

Frequently asked questions

Often, yes. Send us the engine model and full serial number from the plate, with photos of the part if you can, and we’ll check what’s available before you order.

Can you help me choose a replacement engine for my boat?

Yes. Tell us what’s fitted now, how the boat is used and where it operates, and we’ll suggest suitable engines and explain what will need to change.

Do you supply marine generators?

Yes. Tell us what you need to power on board and we’ll help you choose the right size of generator or auxiliary engine.

Can you ship to a boatyard or marina abroad?

Yes. We ship worldwide and can deliver to a boatyard, marina or port. We’ll confirm the route and costs in your quote.

Do you fit engines?

We don’t have our own fitting team, but we work with engineers and boatyards and can usually point you towards someone near you.
