All 1104 engines are 4-cylinder inline, 4.4 litres, with a 105 mm bore and 127 mm stroke. The 1104D-44TA has an 18.2:1 compression ratio and measures 663 x 602 x 775 mm (L x W x H). The most powerful 1104 is the electronic 1104D-E44TA, which Perkins lists at up to 106 kW and 556 Nm as an open power unit. Source: Perkins product specification pages.
Perkins 1103 and 1106 engines
The Perkins 1103 is the 3-cylinder, 3.3 litre version. The naturally aspirated 1103D-33 gives 36.9 kW and 189 Nm, and the turbocharged aftercooled 1103D-33TA gives 58 kW and 310 Nm, both at 2200 rpm. They weigh 264 kg and 276 kg dry. Perkins notes they are particularly popular in tractors and compact industrial machines.
The Perkins 1106 is the 6-cylinder, 7 litre engine of the family, turbocharged and aftercooled, with a 105 x 135 mm bore and stroke. Power runs from 112 kW to 205 kW. The 1106D-E70TA open power unit is rated at 205 kW and 1,050 Nm at 1400 rpm.
Where are Perkins 1100 engines used?
Perkins lists the 1104 for excavators, trenchers, backhoe loaders, rollers, rock drills, tractors, wheeled loaders, forest machines, telehandlers, forklift trucks and motor graders. The 1100 Series is also widely used in generator sets and pumps, where the generator versions carry a G in the engine code.

How to read a Perkins 1100 engine code
Take the 1104D-E44TA as an example:
- 1104: 1100 Series, 4 cylinders (1103 = 3 cylinders, 1106 = 6 cylinders).
- D: the build generation. In this range A builds are non-certified, C builds meet Stage II / Tier 2 and D builds meet Stage IIIA / Tier 3.
- E: electronic engine control.
- 44: 4.4 litres (33 = 3.3 litres, 70 = 7.0 litres).
- T / TA: turbocharged / turbocharged and aftercooled. No letter means naturally aspirated.
The code tells you the family, but not the exact build. For parts or a replacement engine you need the full engine serial number from the data plate.
Perkins 1100 vs the older 1000 Series
The 1100 Series followed the earlier Perkins 1000 Series, which included the 1004 and 1006 engines. Both families are found in the same kinds of machines, but they are not interchangeable part for part. If you are replacing a 1004 or 1006, send us the serial number and the machine details and we will tell you what fits.
How to identify your Perkins 1100 engine
The serial number is stamped on a plate, usually on the side of the cylinder block. It identifies the exact build of your engine, including its power setting, fuel system and fittings. Please send us the full number exactly as written, the make and model of your machine, and a photo of the plate if you can.
Replacing a Perkins 1104 or 1106
- Like-for-like: the simplest route, with no changes to mounts, wiring, cooling or exhaust.
- Mechanical or electronic: an electronic engine (E in the code) needs the right ECM and wiring for your machine. Changing from mechanical to electronic, or the other way, is a bigger job.
- Emissions: replacing the engine in an existing machine can follow different rules from building a new one. Tell us where the machine works and we will help you choose the right build.
