Perkins 400 Series
Perkins 404 Engines
The Perkins 404 is the 4-cylinder, 2.2 litre engine at the top of the Perkins 400 Series. It offers more power and torque than the 3-cylinder 403 in a package that is still compact enough for small machines. You’ll find it in skid steers, compact loaders, compressors, materials handling equipment and generator sets around the world.
At Sleemans we supply these Perkins diesel units and their parts, and help customers choose the right replacement when one needs changing. Here’s the general information you need about each type in the range.
Perkins 404 engine models at a glance
Every Perkins 404 shares the same 2.2 litre, 4-cylinder layout with an 84 mm bore and 100 mm stroke. What changes is the aspiration, power output and emissions level. The figures below are the manufacturer’s published specifications for the industrial versions, and we always confirm the exact rating against your serial number.
| Model | Aspiration | Max power | Max torque | Dry weight | Emissions |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 404D-22 | Naturally aspirated | 38 kW (51 hp) | 143 Nm @ 1800 rpm | 196 kg | Stage IIIA |
| 404D-22T | Turbocharged | 45.5 kW (61 hp) | 192 Nm @ 1800 rpm | 206 kg | Stage IIIA |
| 404D-22TA | Turbocharged, aftercooled | 49.2 kW (66 hp) @ 2800 rpm | 200 Nm @ 1800 rpm | 206 kg | Stage IIIA |
| 404J-E22TA | Turbocharged, aftercooled | 55 kW (74 hp) @ 2800 rpm | 270 Nm @ 1600 rpm | 242 kg | EU Stage V / EPA Tier 4 Final |
Earlier machines often have a C-series engine such as the 404C-22 or 404C-22T. Generator versions carry a G in the code, for example the 404D-22G and 404C-22G, and are built to run at fixed speed for standby and prime power.
Perkins 404D-22
The 404D-22 is the naturally aspirated version of the 404. It is a 2.2 litre, 4-cylinder diesel producing up to 38 kW and 143 Nm at 1800 rpm across a 2200 to 3000 rpm operating range. It weighs around 196 kg dry and holds 10.6 litres of lubricating oil. It is simple, robust and easy to service, features that keep it a favourite in compact plant.
Perkins 404D-22T
Adding a turbocharger lifts the 404D-22T to 45.5 kW and 192 Nm at 1800 rpm. Its dimensions are almost identical to the naturally aspirated engine, which makes it a common choice where a machine needs more performance without a bigger engine bay. Dry weight is around 206 kg, and oil capacity is 10.6 litres.
Perkins 404D-22TA
The 404D-22TA adds an aftercooler to the turbocharged engine, cooling the intake air for more power and better efficiency. It is rated at 49.2 kW at 2800 rpm with 200 Nm of torque at 1800 rpm. Perkins describe it as the ideal product for a wide range of off-highway applications.
Perkins 404J-E22TA: the Stage V 404
The 404J-E22TA is the current Stage V version of the Perkins 404. It uses electronic engine management, is turbocharged and aftercooled, and produces 55 kW at 2800 rpm with 270 Nm of torque at 1600 rpm. It meets EU Stage V, US EPA and CARB Tier 4 Final and Japan MLIT Step 4 using a DOC+DPF aftertreatment system. At around 242 kg dry and 807 mm long, it is a little larger than the D-series engines, so it’s worth checking space if you are upgrading an older machine.
Where is the Perkins 404 used?
The 404 is built for compact machines that need a bit more muscle, and many equipment manufacturers use it. Typical applications include:
- Skid steer loaders and compact wheel loaders
- Mini and midi excavators
- Air compressors and welders
- Generator sets and lighting towers
- Lift platforms and access equipment
- Small tractors and turf care machinery
- Materials handling equipment
How to identify your 404
The serial number plate on the cylinder block is the key to getting the right replacement or part. Several 404 builds share the same model name but have different fuel systems, flywheel housings, sumps and fittings for specific machines. With the full serial number, we can match your specific build.
Please send us the serial number exactly as written, the make and model of your machine or generator, and a photo of the plate and engine if you can.
Replacing a Perkins 404
When it’s time for a replacement, consider:
- Like-for-like: the easiest route if the same build is available, with no changes to mounts, wiring or exhaust.
- Naturally aspirated or turbo: matching the original aspiration keeps power, cooling and fuel settings as the machine was designed.
- Emissions: replacing an engine in an existing machine follows different rules from building a new one. Let us know where the machine works, and we’ll help you stay compliant.
- Space: the Stage V 404J-E22TA and its aftertreatment need more room than the D-series engines.
