Perkins 400 Series
Perkins 403 Engines
The Perkins 403 is the compact 3-cylinder member of the Perkins 400 Series, and one of the most widely used small diesel engines in the world. You’ll find one in mini excavators, welders, lighting towers, small generators, compressors and turf care machines. It packs a lot of reliable performance into a very small space, which is why so many equipment manufacturers have chosen it.
At Sleemans we supply these Perkins engines and their parts, and help you find the right replacement when an old engine reaches the end of its life. This page covers each type, its key specifications, how to identify yours and what to consider when replacing one.
Perkins 403 engine models at a glance
The Perkins 403 family has grown over several generations. The figures below are Perkins’ published specifications for the industrial versions. Ratings vary with build and application, so we always confirm the exact figures against your serial number.

| Model | Displacement | Aspiration | Max power | Max torque | Emissions |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 403J-07 | 0.76 litre | Naturally aspirated | 13.3 kW (17.8 hp) | 44 Nm @ 2400 rpm | EU Stage V |
| 403D-11 | 1.1 litre | Naturally aspirated | 21 kW (28.2 hp) @ 3400 rpm | 67 Nm @ 2400 rpm | Stage IIIA |
| 403D-15 | 1.5 litre | Naturally aspirated | 25.1 kW (33.7 hp) @ 3000 rpm | 96 Nm @ 1800 rpm | Stage IIIA |
| 403D-17 | 1.7 litre | Naturally aspirated | 26.1 kW (35 hp) | 106 Nm @ 1800 rpm | Stage IIIA |
| 403J-17T | 1.7 litre | Turbocharged | 18.4 kW (24.6 hp) | 93.6 Nm @ 1700 rpm | EU Stage V |
| 403J-E17T | 1.7 litre | Turbocharged | 36 kW (48 hp) @ 2800 rpm | 166 Nm @ 1600 rpm | EU Stage V / EPA Tier 4 Final |
Older machines may have an earlier C-series engine, such as the 403C-11 or 403C-15. Generator versions carry a G in the model code, for example the 403A-15G1, and are built to run at a fixed speed for power generation.
Perkins 403D-11
The 403D-11 is the smallest of the D-series 403 engines and one of Perkins’ most compact units. It is a 1.1 litre, 3-cylinder, naturally aspirated, indirect-injection diesel engine with a 77 mm bore and 81 mm stroke. It produces up to 21 kW at 3400 rpm and weighs around 96 kg dry. Its small size makes it a popular choice for compact equipment where space is tight.
Perkins 403D-15
The 403D-15 is the mid-range 403 engine and probably the most common. It is a 1.5 litre, naturally aspirated, 3-cylinder diesel engine with an 84 mm bore and 90 mm stroke, producing up to 25.1 kW at 3000 rpm and 96 Nm of torque at 1800 rpm. It holds 6 litres of lubricating oil and weighs around 154 kg dry. Perkins describes it as the ideal engine for small industrial applications, and you’ll find it in everything from mini diggers to compressors.
Perkins 403D-17
The Perkins Diesel 403D-17 shares the 403D-15’s footprint but has a longer 100 mm stroke, giving 1.7 litres and more torque. It produces up to 26.1 kW and 106 Nm at 1800 rpm, weighs around 163 kg dry and also holds 6 litres of oil. If your machine needs a little more pulling power without a bigger engine bay, the 403D-17 is the one to look at.
Perkins 403J Stage V engines
The J-series 403 engines are built to meet EU Stage V emissions for new machinery.
- 403J-07: a 0.76 litre engine producing 13.3 kW, ideal for very small machines.
- 403J-17T: a 1.7 litre turbocharged engine rated at 18.4 kW, just under 19 kW, which lets it meet Stage V without a particulate filter.
- 403J-E17T: the most powerful 403, a 1.7 litre turbocharged, electronically controlled engine producing 36 kW and 166 Nm. It meets Stage V and EPA Tier 4 Final using a DOC+DPF aftertreatment system.
Where is the Perkins 403 diesel engine used?
Perkins designed the 400 Series for compact machines. Typical applications include:
- Mini excavators and compact diggers
- Skid steer and compact wheel loaders
- Welders and air compressors
- Lighting towers and small generator sets
- Lift platforms and access equipment
- Small tractors, agricultural and turf care machinery
- Materials handling equipment
How to identify your 403
Before ordering a replacement or parts, find the serial number plate, usually found on the cylinder block. The full serial number tells us exactly which build you have, including the fuel system, flywheel housing and other options that affect fitment. Two motors both called 403D-15 can differ in ways that matter when you fit one into a machine.
Send us the full serial number, the machine make and model and, ideally, a photo of the plate and the motor. We’ll do the rest.
Replacing a Perkins 403 engine
When a 403 is worn out, the best option depends on your machine:
- Like-for-like replacement: the simplest route if the same model is available, as mounts, wiring and exhaust stay the same.
- Short or long block: if the ancillaries are in good condition, a short or long block can be a cost-effective alternative to a complete unit. Ask us what’s available for your build.
- Replacing an older engine with a current model: if your original engine is no longer made, we’ll identify the nearest current 403 and flag any changes needed.
- Emissions: fitting an engine to an existing machine follows different rules from building a new one. Tell us where the machine works and we’ll help you choose a compliant engine.
Perkins 403 parts and servicing
Most Perkins diesel problems we see on the 403 come from missed services, poor fuel or overheating. Regular oil and filter changes, clean fuel and a healthy cooling system go a long way. We supply 403 parts including oil, fuel and air filters, gasket sets, water pumps, belts and a service kit to suit your build, plus an overhaul kit for a full rebuild. Send us your serial number and we’ll match the right parts to your engine.
