Which job are you buying an engine for?
Replacing a failed engine like for like
Have the serial number plate, the model code and a few photos to hand. The plate tells us the exact build, so we can usually confirm a like-for-like match or the nearest current equivalent.
Finding a modern equivalent for an older engine
Older engines are often discontinued. A current replacement may differ in mounting points, flywheel housing, controls or emissions level. Some conversions need modification, and we will say so before you order.
Choosing an engine for a new machine
Know the power you need, the duty (continuous or intermittent), the running speed, your preferred cooling type and the emissions stage that applies. Tell us the application and we will suggest a suitable rating. Request a quote when you are ready.
Types of industrial diesel engine
Air-cooled engines
Air-cooled engines, such as Hatz, Yanmar L-series, Lombardini 15LD and the classic Deutz 912/913, have no radiator, coolant or water pump. They are simple, start well in the cold and cope with dust and heat. Examples include the Yanmar L100V6.
Choose this if the engine will work somewhere remote or dusty, or you want as few cooling parts as possible.
Oil-cooled engines
Oil-cooled engines such as the Deutz 1011 and 2011 use the engine oil to carry heat away. They are compact and quiet, with few cooling parts to fail.
Choose this if you want a compact, quiet engine without a radiator.
Water-cooled engines
Water-cooled engines (Perkins, Kubota, Yanmar TNV, Rehlko KDI and Deutz TCD) run smoother and quieter, and are the basis of most modern Stage V machinery. See the Rehlko KDI-TCR 2504E5/26 for one example.
Choose this if you are building or repowering a machine that must meet current emissions rules.
Single-cylinder and multi-cylinder engines
Small single-cylinder engines suit pumps and small plant. Three- and four-cylinder engines are the usual choice for compact plant and generators, where smoother running matters. Engines can be naturally aspirated or turbocharged. A turbocharger generally gives more power from the same size of engine.
Diesel and petrol engines: the differences that matter
A petrol engine draws in a mix of air and fuel and ignites it with a spark plug. A diesel relies on compression alone to ignite the fuel. That makes diesels strong at low speed (high torque), and they generally use less fuel for the same work.
Why industrial users choose diesel
Torque at low revs suits loaded machinery. Fuel efficiency matters when an engine runs for long hours. Diesel engines also have a reputation for durability in continuous duty, and diesel fuel is usually already on site.
What industrial diesel engines are used for
Generators and power generation
Generator engines run at a fixed speed, often for long periods, so steady governing and fuel efficiency matter. Perkins, Lister Petter and Kubota engines are widely used here. See our diesel generators.
Pumps and compressors
These often run continuously at or near full load. Hatz and Lister Petter engines are common choices, and air-cooled designs suit sites without a water supply for cooling.
Construction and compact plant
Excavators and compact plant work at varying speed and load, so low-speed torque and compact size count. Kubota and Perkins are typical here. See our construction page.
Agriculture, groundcare and marine
Mowers and farm equipment need compact, smooth engines. Marine use is part of Lister Petter’s heritage.
Emissions rules: Stage V and beyond
New machines versus replacement engines
EU Stage V limits exhaust emissions from non-road engines. New machines sold in the UK and EU need engines that meet the stage for their power band, which is generally Stage V today. Replacing an engine in an existing machine can follow different rules, so tell us where the machine works. See Stage V engines and generators.
Engines for export markets
Overseas markets can use different standards, such as US EPA Tier levels. Always tell us the destination country.
Which industrial diesel engine brand is best?
There is no single best engine. The right one depends on application, duty, size and parts support where you are. We do not rank brands or name a “big three”.
What we can say is where each is strong. Perkins has a huge worldwide parts and service base. Deutz is known for air- and oil-cooled engines and modern Stage V TCD units. Hatz makes compact, tough air-cooled engines. Lister Petter is a British name with a long industrial heritage. Yanmar is known for reliability, and Rehlko covers the KDI, KDW and 15LD ranges. Kubota engines are smooth and compact.
Reliability depends heavily on correct sizing, regular servicing and clean fuel, whichever brand you choose.
Industrial diesel engine prices
We do not publish prices, because they depend on the engine and how it is specified. The main factors are:
- brand and model
- power and speed rating
- cooling type
- emissions stage
- whether you need a new engine or an alternative
- accessories such as starter, alternator, radiator and controls
- freight and packing
For a quote, send the serial number or model code, the application and the destination country through our quote form.
How we match an engine to your serial number
What to send us
- A photo of the serial plate
- Photos of the engine from two angles
- The model code
- What the engine powers
- Any flywheel or PTO details
- 50 Hz or 60 Hz, for generator sets
We confirm the exact build, power setting, fuel system, sump and fittings. Where the exact model is discontinued, we propose the nearest current engine and tell you what will need to change.
Parts and support after fitting
Sleemans has always been a spare parts business first. We carry filters, gaskets, overhaul kits, fuel injection parts, starters and alternators for the brands above, so we can keep your engine running once it is fitted.
Worldwide supply
We supply engines and parts to customers around the world, with export packing and shipping arranged to most countries. Many overseas customers are dealers and machine builders who need engines that are hard to find locally. Details of our consolidated shipping are on their own page.
Frequently asked questions
Can you supply an engine to match my old one?
Usually, yes. Send us the engine’s serial number and model code, and we will check the exact build. We will then confirm a like-for-like replacement or the closest current equivalent.
What is the best industrial diesel engine?
There is no single best engine. The right choice depends on the application, the duty, the size and the parts support in your region. Tell us what the engine will power and we will suggest suitable options.
Which diesel engine brand is the most reliable?
Reliability depends as much on correct sizing, servicing and clean fuel as on the brand. All seven brands we supply have a long record in industrial use. We would rather match the engine to your job than name a winner.
What is the difference between air-cooled and water-cooled diesel engines?
Air-cooled engines have no radiator or coolant, so they are simple and cope well with heat and dust. Water-cooled engines are smoother and quieter, and are the basis of most modern Stage V machinery.
How is a diesel engine different from a petrol engine?
A diesel ignites its fuel by compressing air until it is hot, while a petrol engine uses a spark plug. Diesels generally give more low-speed torque and use less fuel for the same work.
Do you supply engines for generators?
Yes. Many of the engines we supply go into generator sets, as replacements or for new builds. Generator engines run at a fixed speed, so tell us the frequency (50 Hz or 60 Hz) and the generator’s rating. See also our diesel generators.
Can you ship engines overseas?
Yes. We ship engines and parts worldwide and can advise on packing and delivery for your country.
Do you supply Stage V engines?
Yes. Most current engines from the brands we supply are available in Stage V versions for new machinery. We can advise on what applies to your machine.
