Deutz Engines

Deutz engines power construction machines, tractors, compressors, generators and pumps all over the world. The German manufacturer is famous for well designed, tough air-cooled and oil-cooled engines like the 912, 1011 and 2011, and today builds a modern range of water-cooled TD and TCD engines that meet EU Stage V. At Sleemans we supply new and replacement Deutz engines and parts, and help customers find the right engine when an old one needs changing.

Who makes Deutz engines?

Deutz AG is based in Cologne, Germany. It was founded in 1864 by Nicolaus Otto, the inventor of the four-stroke engine, and Eugen Langen, which makes it one of the oldest engine manufacturers in the world. Today Deutz builds diesel, gas and alternative-drive diesel engines from 18 kW up to 620 kW for off-highway machinery, and many well-known machine builders fit them in construction, agriculture, materials handling and power generation equipment.

Deutz engine models explained

Once you know the pattern, a Deutz engine name tells you a lot about the engine. In the older ranges, a B at the front means turbocharged and F stands for a four-stroke engine. The number that follows is the number of cylinders, then comes a letter for the engine’s cooling layout (L on the air-cooled 912 and 913, for example), and the series number comes last. A BF4M 2011 is therefore a turbocharged, four-cylinder 2011-series engine. In the current range, D means naturally aspirated, TD means turbocharged and TCD means turbocharged with a charge air cooler, followed by the capacity in litres.

Are Deutz engines any good?

Deutz engines have a strong reputation for durability, especially in dusty, hot and remote conditions. The air-cooled 912 and 913 won a following because there is no radiator to block, no coolant to leak and no water pump to fail. The oil-cooled 1011 and 2011 brought the same simplicity in a quieter, more compact package. The current TCD engines are efficient and smooth, and meet Stage V without giving up torque. Like any engine, a Deutz lasts longest when it is serviced on time with the right oil and filters.

Where are Deutz engines used?

  • Mini excavators, compact loaders, skid steers and telehandlers
  • Tractors and agricultural machinery
  • Rollers, pavers and road construction equipment
  • Air compressors, lighting towers and welders
  • Generator sets and pump sets
  • Forklifts, airport ground support and materials handling equipment

Machine builders in many markets have fitted Deutz engines, so the same engine family can turn up in very different machines.

How to identify your Deutz engine

Every Deutz engine has a type plate showing the engine type (for example BF4M 2011 or TCD 3.6 L4) and a serial number. The serial number is the key to the exact build: the power setting, fuel system, flywheel housing, sump and the fittings for your machine. Please send us the serial number exactly as written, the make and model of your machine, and a photo of the plate and the engine if you can.

Replacing a Deutz engine

  • Like-for-like: the simplest route if the same build is available, with no changes to mounts, wiring or exhaust.
  • Older air- and oil-cooled engines: some 912, 913 and 1011 builds are no longer made. We can source replacements and parts, and advise on a modern equivalent where one fits.
  • Emissions: replacing an engine in an existing machine follows different rules from building a new one. Tell us where the machine works and we will help you stay compliant.
  • Space and cooling: moving from an air-cooled engine to a water-cooled TCD means adding a radiator, and Stage V engines need room for their aftertreatment.

Deutz engine parts

We supply parts for Deutz diesel engines, including oil, fuel and air filters, gaskets and overhaul kits, timing belts, injectors and injection pumps, water and oil pumps, starters and alternators. Send us your engine type and serial number and we will make sure every part fits first time.

Deutz engine FAQs

Who makes Deutz engines?

Deutz engines are made by Deutz AG, a German engine manufacturer based in Cologne and founded in 1864.

Are Deutz engines air-cooled?

Some are. The 912, 913 and 914 series are air-cooled, the 1011 and 2011 series are oil-cooled, and the current D, TD and TCD engines are water-cooled.

What does BF4M mean on a Deutz engine?

B means turbocharged, F means a four-stroke engine and 4 is the number of cylinders. The M describes the engine’s cooling layout, and the number that follows (for example 2011) is the series.

Do you ship Deutz engines overseas?

Yes. We supply customers worldwide and can arrange shipping to most countries for both engines and spare parts.
